Orihon – Style Folding Booklet

Orihon is a style originating from the Tang dynasty in China, it was later developed in the Heian period, Japan, during the 7th to 12th centuries AD.

Objective:

Design an orihon-style folding booklet visualizing the unique personality and character of the person I interviewed, and their relationship to the world they perceive.

Visual storytelling is everything as a designer. Everything humans do, revolves around a story. It's how we contextualize new inputs of information and experiences to make meaning.

Questions I Asked My Interviewee:

Where are you a local?

What color do you most resonate with? Why?

How do access your own intuition?

How has life changed for you since COVID?

What are you asking from the world?

What is a transforming experience you've had in nature?

Favorite animal?

What are some familiar rituals you practice regularly?

How do you quiet your mind?

What is the one thing you want me to know about you?

In these visuals, you can meet my artistic interpretation of my interviewee, Brandon.

I chose a dark ambience to match Brandon's overall demeanor and love for black and red colors. He had expressed some recent struggles with romance and relationships, as well as a deep connection and loving memories of being in the mountains and the beach, looking at sunsets and feeling at peace when one with the world.

One thing he said in his interview is that he prioritizes self-reflection and looking inward as a ritual he does often, as well as being open-minded. This is shown in the visual story with the heart being touched by the spider, and excreting these colored blobs of paint as it blends and merges into being clouds, coming both from the heart and open mind of this character, who is physically looking within themselves.

*This design features the two final stanzas of a poem I felt fitting for this story, written by Jessy Humann.
